Alicante is part of the list regarding Spain’s biggest metropolitan areas, meaning that there is plenty to see in this coastal city. Not only can you learn about its history but also delight yourself by contemplating the natural patrimony composed both by mountains and beaches. Because we do not want you to feel lost, we took the liberty to drop in this article five suggestions of things to see while in Alicante.

  • MARQ Archaeological Museum

Considered the European Museum of the Year in 2004, the work developed by the specialists of this museum is extremely important in order to preserve the cherished patrimony of the city. The collection of the museum consists of the first human presence in the territory, 100.000,00 years ago! It is a very interactive museum, allowing visitors to have a better glance of the routines of the Phoenicians, the Romans and the Moors.

  • Basilica of Santa Maria

This church was built between XIV and XVI centuries and it is the oldest church in the province of Alicante. Like the Concatedral of Saint Nicholas, it was constructed under an ancient mosque and the most interesting fact about this building are the two towers: although they seem identical, the truth is that each one represents a different period. The oldest is from the XIV century, while the second was built in the XVIII century. This church possesses architectural features of the Valencian Gothic style, making it a very unique church.

  • Castle of Santa Barbara

Being on the top of Mount Benacantil, this castle was a strong fortress who protected many of its occupants, including Moorish and Catholic. Don´t worry if you do not appreciate walking stairs, as the site has elevators to carry you to the top. If you decide to walk, you will be rewarded with an amazing view! You will be able to take a look into the city at its highest point (approximately 200 meters) with views to the old town, the marina, the sea and the mountainside. Due to the historical heritage, the castle has permanent exhibitions containing artefacts from the different occupants of this fortress.

  • Contemporary Art Museum

The building that hosts MACA was built in the year of 1685, making it one of the oldest in the city. It is neighbour to another major structure, the Basilica of Santa Maria, which we mentioned above, meaning it is very well located in the city centre. This museum was founded in 1977 and it is an obligatory stop when knowing the work of the Spanish artists Eusebio Sempere and Juana Francés, both born in Alicante. The main mission of the museum is to educate its population and visitors from different countries about the cultural purpose of contemporary art works from the 20th century by exhibiting permanent exhibitions as well as temporary collections of emerging artists.

  • Postiguet Beach

Pretty much everyone stops at this beach because it is so close to the centre, meaning there is no excuse for you not to go for a dive. It is the most known area due to its proximity to other key areas like Explanada de España and for having Mount Benacantil as background. Lots of people usually meet on this beach, as it is a really good spot to enjoy a drink or take a walk in the extensive sand shore.

We can still give you plenty of motives to visit Alicante. Contact us and we shall reveal them to you! Spanish Homes is waiting for you!
